Midland Tyre Shaving – Our start in racing
The initial machine development started in 2012. The aim was to build a market leading machine that would make tyres round and profiled perfectly. The dominant machine in the tyre shaving/buffing market at the time was the American Amermac 720 Truck Tyre Truing Machine. A rotating blade design machine that will remove rubber but not in a uniform repeatable manner. Initially our solid profile designs were to match up with carcass profiles to give a uniform tread depth across the tyre. This matched up with the 100% repeatability and gave instant performance gain.
Midland Tyre Shaving’s first foray into motorsport was in the MX5 MK1 Championship which, at the time, most drivers had tyres cut on the Amermac 720 machine. Within four Championship rounds, Midland’s first unique profiled tyre had total domination in this highly competitive paddock. In the next two seasons other drivers/formulas came knocking. More unique profiles were designed and, subsequently, our customers were extremely successful.
In year 3 of the business I decided to become a race driver myself. Within a year I started to modify my uniform profiles into bespoke offset profiles and then back to back test to feel the difference in the car and lap time gains. Initially it was nothing radical but, little by little, with the help of other customers, a pattern started to emerge.
Effectively, what I call offset radial profiling, was born.
